Happy new year!! I love this time of year and all of the retrospection and reflection that it brings. This year, I’m going a step further than a resolution, I’m challenging myself not to shop for clothing or shoes in 2019. That’s right, no shopping this year!
As a major shopper who has wanted to break my habit for some time, I was trying to figure out the best way to go about it. I thought about limiting my dollar spend each month, or restricting myself to second-hand clothing; but knowing myself, cold turkey is the way to go about it.
Why am I doing this?
Over the last few days, I’ve been inspired to make a lifestyle change. From listening to Michelle Obama’s book, Becoming Michelle to binging on a few too many Netflix docs on minimalism and organization, my brains spinning on the ways that I can streamline my priorities and focus on what really matters. I have a ton of great clothes already, so I will spend this year appreciating what I have.
Also, truth be told, I spend a couple hundred dollars a month shopping. Instead, this year I’ll be putting some of that money towards student loans and putting some of it into savings. Looking back, I at how much shopping I do, I hate how much money I spend each year. So, with this challenge, I’m hoping to break my habit.
Another major reason – my closet can’t handle anymore! I am pushing it to it’s limit right now, and looking at each item, there isn’t a whole lot of variety. I’ve settled into a style that works for me, so each purchase is actually pretty similar to the things I already own. I picked out close to 20 items that I don’t wear regularly, listed a few on my Poshmark closet and will be walking the rest over to Out of the Closet for donation. (Yes, this is post purge. Hang on, bar, you can do it)
Ok, there are a few loopholes
- If it’s a necessity like socks or underwear, that’s fair game and an acceptable purchase.
- Also, I’m planning on getting back into running, so if the time comes when I’ll need new running shoes, those are okay too.
- Gift cards are fair game too. I currently have a Nordstrom gift card and a Banana Republic card that I’m holding on until the time comes where I really, really think I need something.
- Last, I’m excusing myself should I need to replace a basic, staple item.
Please, wish me luck! I have a pretty bad shopping habit, it’s honestly something I do so regularly – it’s going to take some willpower. It’ll also take me holding myself accountable – one of the reasons I published this challenge. Now that it’s out there, hold me accountable, too!
Cheers!
