I’ll admit it, I’m a shopaholic… and not just any shopaholic – I have always been somewhat of a compulsive shopper. I see a pair of shoes or top that I like, I’ll get it. This has lead to an extensive wardrobe of items that I have worn once or maybe not at all.
And while I frequently pick up items, I have been pretty good at keeping my large wardrobe from exploding. My organizational gene helps me achieve this through periodic reevaluations of my wardrobe. Luckily I enjoy organizing and reach a point every few months when I get the itch to reorganize and tidy up.
Recently, I have been able to move towards an even more pared down wardrobe by following my favorite decluttering practices. Also, since starting at my current company, and now having casual work dress code, I’ve found a “uniform” that I wear to work and on the weekends. I now have a silhouette, color palette and generally a formula I follow and like the look.
Considering this new “dress code,” following my decluttering practices have come easier, enabling me to get rid of more items, declutter, and really reduce stress in my life. Take a look:
Tips to Declutter and Move towards Minimal
- Purge – a couple weeks ago I did a large purge of items I haven’t worn since I moved to my current home. If I haven’t worn it in the last year, I have to come to terms that it probably won’t get worn! Excluding dresses and some of my formal wear, that doesn’t get worn nearly as frequently.
- Make Some Money – I’ve sold items on Poshmark for the last couple years, and since using the social selling app, I made close to $1500 on my old clothes. I suggest reselling your items that are designer or still trendy, these items do well on apps and in resale stores.
- Donate – Every item isn’t a hot resale item, but I’ve found that donating lightly used clothing feels great, helps the community, and even can be deducted on your taxes! It’s a win-win situation.
- Purge Again – After a big closet cleanout, you can feel a huge weight off your shoulder and a decluttered space – but do it again! A couple weeks after a big purge, I went through my closet and drawers again and found even more that I could part ways with. There was a new willingness to get rid of items and I was able to be real with myself and pick out items that I know I don’t need. I also looked forward to finding a couple more gems I could add to my Poshmark store!
- Redecorate – I enjoy moving around my furniture every few months – and I find that redecorating helps to reduce clutter. The act of moving your furniture requires a certain willingness to let go of things in order to keep spaces tidy.
I hope these tips help as you declutter and reduce your wardrobe. While I don’t see myself achieving capsule wardrobe status {though I wish!), following these tips is a great way to reduce a wardrobe and keep a steady turnover of unworn clothing.
And with that said, check out my Poshmark closet for my latest additions!
