When you think about your next travel adventure, it’s easy to default to the big names—New York, L.A., Chicago, or even iconic international spots like Paris or Rome. But if you step off the beaten path, you’ll discover so many underrated gems in the U.S. that are just waiting to be explored. Here are a few of the places I’d love to visit someday:
1. Baltimore, Maryland: Charm City for a Reason
Baltimore is a city that surprises you. Sure, it might be known for its gritty TV dramas, but dig deeper and you’ll uncover a vibrant city full of history, culture, and those famous crab cakes.
Start at the Inner Harbor to tour historic ships, explore the National Aquarium, or simply soak in the waterfront vibes. If you love art, don’t miss the American Visionary Art Museum—it’s an experience as quirky and creative as the city itself.
For a place to stay, skip the standard chains and look for one of many chic Baltimore hotels, many of which offer rooftop bars with incredible views.
2. Sedona, Arizona: Red Rocks and Zen Vibes
While the Grand Canyon steals the spotlight, Sedona is no slouch when it comes to jaw-dropping natural beauty. The iconic red rock formations are breathtaking, whether you’re hiking, taking photos, or simply marveling at the scenery.
Sedona is also famous for its energy vortexes—spots said to have spiritual and healing energy. Even if you’re not into that, you might leave feeling refreshed and at peace.
3. Madison, Wisconsin: Cheese, Beer, and Charm
Madison might just be one of America’s coolest small cities. It’s surrounded by beautiful lakes, has bike-friendly streets, and boasts an underrated food scene.
Of course, no trip to Wisconsin would be complete without indulging in cheese—pair it with a local craft beer for the ultimate foodie experience. If you can, visit during the Dane County Farmers’ Market, the largest producer-only market in the country.
4. Boise, Idaho: Not Just Potatoes
Boise is a delightful surprise. Its riverfront greenbelt is perfect for nature lovers, and its burgeoning food and art scenes add a vibrant energy to the city. With its riverfront greenbelt, it’s quickly becoming a hotspot for travelers who want something a little different.
Be sure to check out Freak Alley Gallery, an outdoor space filled with colorful murals and graffiti that tell a story of the city’s creativity. And yes, you can still enjoy some world-class potatoes while you’re there.
5. Asheville, North Carolina: The Artsy Mountain Escape
This artsy gem in the Blue Ridge Mountains is high on my list for when the time is right. After a recent storm, the area is still recovering and isn’t fully ready for visitors yet. But when it is, I’d love to explore its scenic trails, vibrant local breweries, and buzzing live music scene.
The Biltmore Estate—a grand mansion that’s part luxury and part history—is a must-see for anyone visiting. Asheville has a unique mix of creativity and natural beauty that I can’t wait to experience one day.
Exploring these underrated spots reminds us that there’s so much more to discover beyond the big-name destinations. Whether it’s art, food, history, or nature, these cities offer experiences you won’t soon forget.
