Some of the best water views in California are right in our backyard. And if you’re visiting the Bay Area, there’s so much more to explore beyond San Francisco. The region is surrounded by small coastal towns that offer beautiful waterfront scenery, great food, and quaint overnight stays worth planning around. Whether you have a free Saturday or a full weekend to spare, these spots are worth every mile from the Bay Area. From charming bayside towns to dramatic Northern California coastline, here are my favorite picks for a quick escape to the water.
Day Trips
Sausalito
Sausalito is one of those places that feels like a world away even though it’s just across the bridge. The waterfront is made for walking — boutique shops, local galleries, and stunning views of the San Francisco skyline line the main drag. For a meal with a view, Spinnaker is a must. Floor-to-ceiling windows look straight out onto the bay, making it one of the most scenic dining rooms in the area. If you want to stay longer, Sausalito has some incredible Airbnb rentals right on the water — worth bookmarking for a quick overnight.

Getting there: About 30 minutes from Oakland via the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge or a ferry from SF.
Don’t miss: Walking the waterfront path at golden hour — the views of San Francisco across the bay are hard to beat.
Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay has a moody, coastal charm that’s hard to find anywhere else. It’s often overcast, which somehow makes it feel even more atmospheric — perfect for a slow morning walk along the bluffs. Pull up a bowl of clam chowder at one of the local spots on Main Street and watch the waves roll in. The drive down Highway 1 is beautiful on its own.

Getting there: About 45 minutes to an hour south of Oakland.
Don’t miss: The bluff trail walk along the coast — it’s easy, scenic, and one of the best free things to do in the area.
Weekend Stays
Monterey
Monterey is one of my favorite coastal weekend destinations in California. The drive alone is worth it — winding along the coast through Pebble Beach and the famous 17-Mile Drive is stunning. For stays, the Plaza Hotel sits right on the water and has that classic Monterey feel, and the Portola Hotel & Spa is a walkable hotel near the pier and a solid pick as well. Seafood is the move here. The wharf area has plenty of options and the fishing boats coming in and out of the harbor make for a great backdrop.

Getting there: About 2 to 2.5 hours south of Oakland on Highway 1 or 101.
Don’t miss: The 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach — pull over at Lone Cypress for one of the most iconic views on the California coast.
Capitola
Capitola is one of those places that looks too pretty to be real. The brightly colored beachfront buildings stacked along the shore are incredibly photogenic — it’s one of the most Instagrammable spots on the California coast. Zelda’s on the Beach is a local staple, right on the water with a great vibe. Even on a cold, overcast day, wandering the village feels special. Pair it with a stop in Santa Cruz just five minutes away and you have a full weekend sorted.

Getting there: About 1.5 to 2 hours south of Oakland.
Don’t miss: The Capitola Wharf at low tide — the reflection of the colorful buildings in the wet sand makes for an incredible photo.
Stinson Beach
Stinson Beach is one of the few sandy beaches within easy reach of the Bay Area, and the drive through Marin to get there is half the experience. The town is small and laid-back — a handful of restaurants, a general store, and a long stretch of beach that feels far removed from city life. It’s a great spot to slow down, take a long walk, and let the weekend actually feel like a weekend.

Getting there: About 1 to 1.5 hours from Oakland via Highway 1 through Marin.
Don’t miss: Stopping at Muir Beach Overlook on the drive in — the views of the Pacific from the cliffside pullout are breathtaking and only take five minutes.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to travel far to find beautiful water. The Bay Area is surrounded by coastline, bays, and beaches that are worth revisiting season after season. Whether you’re planning a quick Saturday adventure or a full weekend away, any of these spots will deliver.
